Play It Forward hosted “Adaptive Surf NYC” at Rockaway Beach on July 11 where more than 192 athletes participated while supported nearly 500 volunteers and hundreds of spectators.
Play It Forward is a core adaptive sports and recreation program of Wheeling Forward and is designed to help people with disabilities get active through inclusive events such as adaptive surfing, skating, and water skiing.
Organizers shared quotes from participants who had this to say about the July event:
“Honestly I was scared doing it I even closed my eyes the whole time I was in the water I have no balance so I couldn’t sit on the board it’s been over 20 years since I been in the water I been to the board walk but never in the water it self so making a way to actually get on the water was cool.”
Another participant said it was the first time surfing: “It was an epic experience! All that you and the volunteers did for us was truly amazing! When I first arrived I was overwhelmed with emotion to see how many people showed up to spend their day putting a smile on our faces! I’m very fortunate to have an active and supportive family, but seeing strangers come together and share love and kindness made my heart even more full! I will keep spreading the word about all that this organization does and share how much fun I had in hopes to keep raising money for more opportunities like this one.”
