Maryhaven Center of Hope, a nonprofit in Yaphank that aims to expand opportunities for people with disabilities, recently received a grant from the New York State Industries for the Disabled, Inc., (NYSID) to purchase a document scanner to be used for job training.

Officials with NYSID presented Maryhaven with a check for about $11,000, which matched organization’s own investment. The combined $22,000 has been used to purchase a new document scanner.

The scanner introduces new tasks such as document preparation, scanning, indexing, and quality control. These roles can be adapted to different ability levels, allowing employees to learn technical skills and gain confidence in handling advanced equipment.

The equipment is part of Maryhaven’s Integrated Business Center (IBC) – a social enterprise that provides high-quality business services—including document imaging, scanning, and fulfillment—to public and private sector partners.

“As we navigate the future of the Integrated Business Center, new and creative initiatives will pave the way for a sustainable future. This is a small example of how we plan to invest in our program with the help of our partners to ensure ample employment opportunities for people with disabilities.” Charles Vanek, Executive Director of Maryhaven, said in a statement.

Large scanners often have user-friendly interfaces, adjustable settings, and automation features that reduce physical strain. This makes the work environment more accessible for individuals with mobility or dexterity challenges. By expanding the scope of services, Maryhaven can attract more business, leading to stable jobs for employees with disabilities, officials with the nonprofit said.

“We are proud to assist Maryhaven in helping employees with disabilities thrive in their jobs. Meaningful employment not only empowers individuals with disabilities but also plays a vital role in strengthening our local and state economy,” said Maureen O’Brien, president and CEO of NYSID, in a statement.
