In recognition of World Autism Awareness Day, John Lewis Childs School community came together for an inclusive Silent Disco on April 1.
The event at the school in the Floral Park-Bellerose School District offered a unique experience in which students and staff danced to music streamed through wireless headphones, rented by Silent Disco LI, allowing each participant to control their own volume and sensory input. This thoughtful approach created a welcoming environment, particularly for individuals with sensory sensitivities.
With multiple music channels and designated quiet zones, the Silent Disco empowered attendees with choice and flexibility. Students were able to socialize, express themselves through movement and connect with peers in a low-pressure setting tailored to diverse needs. Each class contributed a unique sensory board, displayed throughout the gymnasium to enhance the interactive atmosphere. The quiet zones featured alternative seating, and there were sensory mats for students to explore.
The Silent Disco event served as a meaningful opportunity to raise awareness about autism while fostering empathy and acceptance.
